Sharing Information about State Assessments with Families of Children with Disabilities

CPIR joins with the National Center on Educational Outcomes (NCEO) as the first action step in a collaboration to develop and share user-friendly information about state assessments with families of children with disabilities. This webinar focuses on NCEO’s new (and quite amazing!) resource, the Participation Communications Toolkit. The highly customizable toolkit is designed for stakeholders to use in discussing and making decisions about how children with disabilities will participate in state assessments. The webinar highlights the role that Parent Centers can play in supporting the family’s role as one of the primary decision makers about their child’s participation. It’s also available in Spanish.

Taking the Alternate Assessment Does NOT Mean Education in a Separate Setting!

This 4-page Parent Brief from the TIES Center focuses on alternate assessments for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. As the brief’s title indicates, the fact that a student will be taking the alternative assessment does not mean that he or she then needs to be educated in a separate, non-inclusive setting. The brief reviews IDEA’s least restrictive environment (LRE) provisions and other legal provisions that support inclusion in the regular classroom. It also provides guidance to parents on what to say and stress in the IEP meeting. The brief closes with “Next Steps for Parents” and a short list of additional resources.

Download the brief and find out more about the TIES Center’s other materials for parents.

Finding the Data

Education data are critical to understanding whether or not America’s children are getting the education they deserve and the education that will prepare them to be successful. Transparency in education data can help stakeholders celebrate well-deserved school successes and inform conversations about efforts to improve our schools.

Finding the Data : A State-by-State Assessment of Education Data Transparency provides a systematic and deeper understanding of how state education agencies compare across a set of 3 broad dimensions of education transparency: accessibility and access, quality, and disaggregation for key student groups. Parents, advocacy organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders need this information to understand the performance and quality of schools in their state.
