In response to the 2012 school shootings in Newtown, CT, Co-Director of the Center of Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports Dr. George Sugai spoke with the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) about positively supporting children and youth with mental health challenges.
He specifically addressed three questions:
- What long-term steps do you recommend to ensure that students with mental health issues receive the right services?
- What can you do to support children with mental health issues?
- What general guidelines do you use in your own support efforts for children and youth with disabilities and mental health challenges?
Note that this resource also includes a link to the original interview, which also features Kristine Melloy, President of the Council for Children with Behavior Disorders, addressing how schools and the field of special education can help ensure that students who require mental health services get the help that they need.
