Asian family of mom, dad, and their toddler, who's pushing a stroller with a baby doll in it(2018; Updated July 2023) | (Available in English and Spanish) | Useful for sharing with families whose children are experiencing developmental delays

Context | The Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center (ECTA) offers a collection of Practice Improvement Tools to support early childhood specialists in using evidence-based practices. These are based on the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) Recommended Practices. Tools and resources guide practitioners and families in supporting young children who have, or are at-risk for, developmental delays or disabilities across a variety of early childhood settings. The tools include performance checklists, practice guides, illustrations of the practices, and guidance materials.

Family Practice Guides in English and Spanish | This large set of tools includes Family Practice Guides that practitioners can share with families to illustrate the DEC Recommended Practices (also available in Spanish). Each practice guide includes a description, a brief video illustration with Spanish-language closed captions, a scenario, and changes to expect as a result of implementing the associated practices. The Practice Guides are listed  by the DEC Recommended Practices topics:

  • Assessment
  • Environment
  • Family
  • Instruction
  • Interaction
  • Teaming & Collaboration
  • Transition

Under each of these topics, there are multiple guides. For example, under “Assessment” alone, there are 5 guides:

  • Family Member Roles in Informed Clinical Reasoning
  • Partnering with Your Child’s Assessment Team Members
  • Everyday Child-and-Family Activities
  • Building on My Child’s Strengths
  • Seeing My Child’s Strengths
